The history of this traditional Slovak drink is traced back to the mid-19th century, when the first mentions about Slovaks distilling Borovicka where found. They made the juniper spirit according to their own taste or different strength. Later, the spirit was produced in large quantities. In 1933, the first juniper spirit factory started producing its own Borovicka called JUNIPERUS.
The fact that this is a traditional Slovak beverage has also been taken into account within the European Union. In the category of juniper spirits, there are protected geographical indications such as Slovak borovicka, Inovecka borovicka or Liptovska borovicka.
Like other alcoholic beverages, of course, it is true that drinking is reasonable. However our Slovak tradition says, that in small amounts, the Borovicka helps, for example, to improve digestion or to reduce toothache. Even when applied to wounds, it can destroy molds and inflammations.
